Women in Mining in Nigeria (WIMIN) has enjoin the general public to join the campaign to diversify Nigeria’s economy from oil to non-oil sector, as they advocated for the impartial treatments resulting from gender bias in Nigeria’s solid mineral sector.
A communique after a 3-day capacity building held in Ado-Ekiti by WIMIN in partnership with the Open Society Initiative for West Africa (OSIWA) called for the implementation of legal and policy frameworks that protect the right of women in the mining sector.
The communique, signed by Amb. Regina Edzuwah, National Welfare and Dr. Yemisi Ajisafe, Ekiti State Coordinator, WIMIN, said there was urgent need to safeguard the rights of women and children in the solid mineral sector.
They called for the establishment of gender-responsive policies and system in companies and cooperatives.
“Government should take specific actions for women inclusion and should be implemented through the encouragement of women led mining cooperations societies, integration into the mining sector and overall empowerment.
“There should be psychosocial support to victims of human rights violations,” the communique urged.
