Updated: Court frees Sowore from custody, orders passport submission

Justice Taiwo Taiwo of the Federal High Court, Abuja, on Tuesday ordered the immediate release of Mr Omoleye Sowore, convener of the revolutionNow movement.

Justice Taiwo further ordered that Sowore’s International passport be submitted to the Chief Registrar of the court within 48 hours of judgment.

He said that since the 45 days detention order had elapsed and not been renewed, also in view of the motion ex-parte earlier withdrawn, there was no extant order for Sowore’s continuous detention.

He explained that although there was an information filed to the court on Sept. 23, deposed to by one Mr Tanko Musa, the information was not before him yet.

Justice Taiwo also ordered that Sowore’s lawyer, Femi Falana, must be responsible for him once there is a formal charge against him in court.

Sowore was arrested on August 3rd, two days before a rally tagged Revolutionnow, for allegedly plotting to overthrow a democratically elected government.

The courts had given the DSS permission to detain him for 45 days before a move to obtain another order on Tuesday.
