Ekiti State Police Command has arrested three suspects over the death of a vigilante, Alabi Odunayo Solomon, at a section of Ikere-Ekiti, the second largest town in Ekiti State.
The arrests were made after Alabi, 52, was gunned down on Saturday night by unknown gunmen who invaded a quarry along Ikere-Iju-Akure road where he was working as a guard.
It was gathered that about three vigilante men were stationed at the quarry to prevent stealing of the company’s property, and the men had been there for about six months before the ugly incident.
Narrating his ordeal, one of the night guards, who craved anonymity, said the assailants came in the dead of night and shot their leader from the window. He said the other guard was tied with rope before the gunmen carted away electric cables and other equipment.
However, Commander of the Vigilante Group in Ekiti State, Mr. Akin Olounloni, claimed that the vigilante was killed by some suspected cultists.
According to him, the deceased had earlier reported that some cultists threatened to kill him after he reprimanded them and he instructed him to report the case to the police in Ikere. He said the affected parties were called and the matter was settled, only for him to receive a call that the man was killed overnight.
Commander of the Special Anti Robbery Squad in Ekiti, Mr Marcus Ogundola, confirmed that three suspects have been arrested in connection with the crime.
“We have arrested three suspects but investigation is still ongoing. We cannot say for now whether they were the real perpetrators, but we are thoroughly digging into the killing,”he said.
