Police officer, four others killed as gunmen invade Niger community

Armed bandits have reportedly killed a police officer and four others in Gwada community, Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State after attacking the area in their hundreds.

The other victims included two women and two children, all living in the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp at the Gwada IDPs camp.

It was gathered that the attackers, who carried out the dastardly act on Saturday afternoon, kidnapped some villagers and took cattle away from the community which is about 20km from Minna, the state capital.

Reports say while the policeman died in a gun battle between the gunmen and Joint Security Taskforce, others were killed when the vehicle they were travelling in was shot at.

Confirming the incident, the Public Relations Officer of the state’s Police Command, DSP Wasiu Abiodun, said information was received that armed bandits attacked the Kaduna village via Gwada, Shiroro LGA, but the police tactical team and other security agencies, alongside vigilante personnel, were mobilized to the area and the hoodlums were repelled.
