Ekiti State Police Command has begun investigation into a shooting incident which resulted in the death of a polytechnic graduate, Olaoye Akintayo, at Queens Court Hotel in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State capital, on Saturday night.
Another victim, who was shot in the leg, is currently battling for his life in the hospital.
It was gathered that about five policemen accompanied an Assistant Inspector-General of Police to the hotel and were shooting into the air while elated, an action which resulted in the unfortunate incident.
The policemen reportedly rushed Akintayo and the injured victim to the Ekiti State University Teaching and subsequently fled, leaving their Ford van behind.
Some documents, which included a Warrant Card of one Sergeant Tizhe Goji and his NPF Pension form, were discovered inside the vehicle when crowd gathered to catch a glimpse of the van on Sunday morning.
The family of the deceased graduate were said to have stormed the hospital and the palace of Ewi of Ado-Ekiti, Oba Rufus Adejugbe, to demand justice.
When contacted, the spokesman of the state’s Police Command, Sunday Abutu, confirmed that the policeman fingered in the shooting had been arrested.
Abutu, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, said, “We have been able to establish that there was a shooting on Saturday night at one hotel in Ado-Ekiti. Two persons were hit and one had died while the second man is receiving treatment in the hospital.
“The policeman that was responsible had been arrested and now in our custody.
“The Commissioner of Police had ordered a thorough investigation into the shooting and that we have commenced.
“We are not going to hide anything. Though those involved are not from our command, but the incident is within our jurisdiction and we promise that whoever found culpable will be prosecuted accordingly.”
