A 22-year-old man, Usman Jimoh, has been sentenced to 5 years imprisonment for burglary and stealing a month after he was freed by the Ekiti State Chief Magistrate Court sitting in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital.
Magistrate Tomiwa Daramola disclosed that the convict was earlier released on April 20 when the charge against him was struck out for want of diligent prosecution but was brought back two weeks later for the latest offences.
According to the Police Prosecutor, Inspector Elijah Adejare, Jimoh and others at large broke into the complaints houses at Ilokun area of Ado-Ekiti and stole some items, leading to his arrest.
One of the charges read, “That you Usman Jimoh on 6/5/2022 around 3:30pm at Ado Ekiti did break into dwelling houses of Olokesusi Gbenga and Omojola Mayowa and steal Electric Cable Wire valued at N600,000 property of Olokesusi Gbenga, also on same date and place did steal another Electric Cable Wire, valued at N700,000 property of Omojola Mayowa, contrary to and punishable under section 322 (a) and 302 (1)(a) of the Criminal Laws of Ekiti State 2021.
When the three charges levelled against him were read, Jimoh pleaded guilty.
Delivering judgment, Magistrate Daramola stated that the convict was a serial offender due to his return to the same court that freed him earlier despite warning.
He therefore sentenced him to three years imprisonment on count one and one year each on the remaining counts. The sentences are to run concurrently.
