Gunmen kill INEC official in Imo

An official of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Anthony Nwokorie, has been shot dead by gunmen at Isinweke, the headquarters of Ihitte/Uboma Local Government Area of Imo state.

Nwokorie, who was in charge of the polling unit for the Continuous Voter Registration, was said to have been shot in the chest, resulting in his death.

Newsafresh gathered that the gunmen were over 10 in number and were visibly angry with the ongoing exercise, which they succeeded in disrupting after killing Nwokorie and sending others running in various directions, with some sustaining injuries.

The Public Relations Officer of the state’s police command, Micheal Abattam, confirmed the attack.

Meanwhile, INEC has said two officials of the commission were also missing after the deadly attack that left one dead.

A statement by its National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye, said the exercise has been suspended in Ihitte/Uboma LGA.
