Ekiti confirms first COVID-19 death

Ekiti State on Wednesday confirmed the death of one of the COVID-19 cases, a 29-year-old woman who was the third infected person in the state.

The deceased died at the Intensive Care Unit of the Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido-Ekiti.

She had, about a week ago, come into the state as a pregnant woman and subsequently fell into prolonged labour before she was delivered of a baby and tested positive for the virus.

Speaking to newsmen on Wednesday, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Mojisola Yaya-Kolade, said the woman died around 6.58am in the morning.

According to her, “The woman showed signs of stability on Monday, but unfortunately, her condition deteriorated yesterday and we lost her exactly 6.58am today(Wednesday).”

“We are going to liaise with the family on her burial. We are going to consider safety despite that there was assumption that the virus is not active in corpse, because we don’t know much about the virus.

“But whatever we are going to do won’t be against the interest of the family. But let me assure you that the state will also be on the side of safety.”

Yaya-Kolade disclosed that the hospital where the case died had been sanitised since the time she was diagnosed, adding that members of the public should not stigmatise the facility.

She said all the 78 persons who had contacts with the deceased had been traced and placed in isolation.
