The government of Burundi has announced the death of President Pierre Nkurunziza.
Nkurunziza, aged 55, was said to have died of heart attack after a brief illness.
The government said the late president was admitted to a hospital on Saturday after feeling unwell and his condition improved before a cardiac arrest on Monday which defied all efforts.
Nkurunziza became president in 2005 and was due to step down in August.
In 2015, Burundi experienced a period of unrest after the late president announced he would run for a third term.
He ran for another term in last month’s election after the country’s constitution amendment, though he had earlier announced he would retire after the 2020 elections.
