Withheld results: Ekiti not owing WAEC, says govt

Ekiti State Government on Wednesday says a report that the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) withheld results of public schools’ candidates who sat the council’s exam in August due to debt owed by the government is untrue.

Panic gripped parents and candidates who besieged schools and cyber cafes but could neither collect nor print out results as news flew around that the state government owed WAEC millions of naira, being the free fee declared for all students in public schools by Governor Kayode Fayemi.

The state government has been paying the fee since the inception of Fayemi’s second term in 2018.

Reacting to the situation, the State’s Commissioner for Information, Mr Akin Omole, said the allegation of debt is untrue, adding that the results were put on hold due to computation mistakes by WAEC.

“The seizure was caused by the mistakes made in some of the ways the results were computed. The issue of Ekiti owing money doesn’t arise, it was a blatant lie.

“The government immediately contacted WAEC and it tendered apologies to the state.

“We appeal to our candidates and parents not to be ruffled by this, the government is handling the issue with all seriousness.

“Going by what WAEC said, the results will be released either on Thursday or Friday this week.”
