A 29-year-old man, Bolanle Afeez, was on Monday dragged before an Ikeja Magistrates’ court, Lagos, for alleged N5.5 million fraud.
The unemployed man, who resides at 3, Otunnibi St., Ifako Ijaiye, was charged with theft and fraud.
According to the prosecutor, Olusegun Oke, Afeez visited the complainant, Adewale Awotunde, a car dealer at Agidingbi, Ikeja, on July 2 and asked for a Hyundai Sonata car worth N5.5 million.
He thereafter pretended to have transferred the money by showing the complainant a debit alert on his phone, prompting the dealer to issue car documents to him with the belief that a network issue prevented the credit in his account.
The prosecutor said after the dealer confirmed from the bank that the money was not sent to him, he moved to arrest the suspect, who was caught while trying to sell the car.
When the charge which contravenes sections 287 and 314 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015, was read to him, the defendant pleaded not guilty.
The Magistrate, M.C Ayinde, granted him bail in the sum of N1 million with two sureties in like sum.
The case was adjourned till August 16 for mention.
