The winner of Nigeria’s first gold medal at the just concluded Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, Tijani Latifat Omolola, has decried abandonment by Ogun State government and Hon. Sunday Dare, Minister of Youths and Sports.
Speaking with Amebo Newspaper NG at her uncompleted building abode in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, Omolola said she has made several efforts to meet Governor Dapo Abiodun after the Tokyo 2020 Games but all her efforts proved abortive.
She wept profusely during the interview due to erosion effect on her properties at the uncompleted building situated at Elega area of the town.
‘’I decided to stay in Tokyo, Japan because of the careless attitude of the Nigeria government. After the completion of the Tokyo 2020 Games, the Minister of Youth and Sports welcomed us after our arrival and promised instant awards but up till this moment, we have never seen or heard anything in respect to the prices,” the gold medalist lamented.
The mother of two girls also said she is the only one catering for her two girls as their father is not financially buoyant to cater for the family.
“During the 2016 Olympics, I was given instant cash of N1m as compensation, which I used to secure land and started building my own apartment to be free from landlord issues. The compensation encouraged me to go further in my sport activities, but this time around, not even the Commissioner for Youths and Sports or his Special Assistant called me to congratulate me. I want Nigerians to assist me with anything they can to strengthen my career in life,” she added.
