Nigeria’s innovative entrepreneur, Susan Banjo Oladosu, has taken the mother-and-child products industry by storm as she recently launched first-ever breastfeeding-in-public products, one of the biggest reliefs to nursing mothers around the globe.
A graduate of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, Oladosu took the bold step after she had a baby in 2018 and realised the rigour nursing mothers went through in public.
She thereafter created the Breastfeeding Nursing Cover and the Hand Pillow Sleeves through her company, Aridunnuomo Enterprises, to help mothers and their babies, with safety considerations for both.
According to her,” When I had my baby through Ceasarean Section, precisely October 20, 2018, I realized there was a major problem nursing mothers face. It was difficult raising my baby to my breast level and to make it worse, I had to breastfeed in front of everyone. ‘Would everyone in Lagos keep staring at my breasts?’ birthed the idea of a nursing cover and hand pillow sleeves.
”Nursing covers are not so popular in Nigeria and most women use handkerchiefs. In religious houses, women are confined to a corner or excused to go breastfeed. Introducing Covers was a challenge and was rejected by major super marts. Most felt they were not safe for their babies and no market for them.
”We have sold over 40 products in and outside Nigeria using social media.”
On the safety of the products, she said, ‘’The breastfeeding covers are made of lightweight cotton which is completely safe for your baby. It has an open neck line that accommodates more air and allows bonding (eye contact) with your baby.
‘’The hand pillow sleeve help to carry the baby to the breast level, eliminates pain on the hand and serves as headrest.
‘’Nursing Cover and Sleeve go for N5,000, while Nursing Cover alone is N3,000, and Sleeve alone is N2,500. We also make deliveries to any part of the world.”
Oladosu added that the products could be ordered through Aridunnuomo_products and Susan Banjo Oladosu on Facebook, @Aridunnuomoprod and Susan_banjo on Instagram, or 07034680901.
