Convener of ‘RevolutionNow’, Omoyele Sowore, might be detained for an additional 45 days following an Abuja Federal High Court permission granted to the Department of State Services (DSS) on Thursday.
DSS had approached the court for permission to detain the Sahara Reporters CEO for 90 days in order to carry out thorough investigation.
Justice Taiwo Taiwo also held that after the expiration, the applicants are at liberty might apply for additional days which would be at the discretion of the court.
The Department of State Security on Saturday, August 3, arrested Sowore over his planned protest which was slated for Monday, August 5. The protest however took place in some parts of the country but was met with stern resistance from security agents.
Sources disclosed that Sowore would be charged with felony and attempt to topple the government, having collaborated with foreign forces. This has however generated reactions as some referred to his arrest as unreasonable and dictatorial, while others supported the move by the government.
Sowore contested for president in 2019 under the African Action Congress.
