The House of Representatives Tuesday rejected a bill seeking a single tenure of six years for the president and governors.
Sponsored by John Dyegh from Benue state, the constitutional amendment bill also seeks to provide for an unlimited term of six years for members of the national assembly and state houses of assembly.
The bill which scaled second reading at Tuesday’s plenary session was however kicked against by lawmakers who argued that there was nothing wrong with the current tenure system in Nigeri.
A few lawmakers including Sergius Ogun from Edo State however argued it would save the country the funds used to conduct elections after the initial four-year tenure.
Henry Archibong from Akwa Ibom State followed suit, saying the focus should be on improving Nigeria’s electoral process and not on the number of terms an elected official stays in office.
