A Nigerian Twitter user, Richard Allison, has been trending on the social medium after he got and surpassed 50,000 retweets requested by an Irish club, Cork City FC, for a free trial.
The young Nigerian asked @CorkCityFC on Friday how many retweets were needed to get him a free trial at the 35-year-old club and 50, 000 was requested.
He tweeted an appeal and it was amazing how Twitter users, especially Nigerians, embarked on the seemingly impossible task. As the supports went on, followers tagged celebrities and social media influencers with huge number of followers and 24 hours later, over 56,000 retweets had been achieved.
The news went viral and was featured by @BBCSport, @IrishSunSport and other international media.
Responding to the feat, Cork City FC confessed they ‘didn’t expect that anyway’ and revealed that ‘We have just sent @Richard_ALI_SON and email with the information required so we can help with his visa for the trial.”
It’s really a dream come true for a youth Nigerian footballer as Allison was overwhelmed and couldn’t find the right words to thank his supporters.
Congratulations, Allison! Go make us proud.
