Man arrested for terrorism, jailed for fraud

A Nigerian man, Saad Ahmed Madaki, who was earlier arrested for terrorism has been jailed for fraud after his apprehension exposed his actual offence.

Justice J. K.Dagat of the Federal High Court sitting in Kano, Kano State, on Wednesday, sentenced Madaki to ten years imprisonment over a two million naira fraud.

Trouble started for the convict when he was arrested by the Kano State Joint Task Force over alleged terrorism and was later handed over to the Department of State Security Service.

He was however transferred to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission when he could not be linked to terrorism in any way.

According to the EFCC, further investigations revealed that he fraudulently obtained the sum of two hundred million naira from one Auwalu Abdulkadir, a retired Kano State Treasurer.

Upon arraignment on April 4, 2017, he pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Prosecution Counsel, Douglas I. Gift, presented five witnesses and seven exhibits to the court to establish Madaki’s guilt.

Justice Dagat found him guilty as charged and consequently sentenced him to ten years imprisonment.

The judge also ordered him to pay back the said sum to the victim.
