Dr Chike Akunyili, the husband of Dora Akunyili, late Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, has been murdered by gunmen at Nkpor in the Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
Dr Akunyili was reportedly killed alongside seven other persons on Monday evening, while some other reports mentioned Tuesday.
It was gathered that the deceased was returning from a trip to Onitsha, where he had gone to obtain a posthumous award of excellence for his late wife.
He reportedly ran into the gunmen who were chanting “No election in Anambra in November” and was shot dead.
Brother to the deceased, Cyril Akunyili, alleged that he was murdered by members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) without reasons.
Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, Ikenga Tochukwu, said he was yet to get details of the incident, but the Agulu community, where the Akunyilis hailed from, is in a mourning.
