In response to the ‘EndSARS’ protest across the nation and in various parts of the world, the Inspector General of Police, Adamu Mohammed, has disbanded the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Nigeria Police.
Adamu made the announcement in a live broadcast on Sunday, followed by a press release by the Force Public Relations Office, Frank Mba.
The IGP also said operatives of the disbanded unit will be redeployed to other police formations and commands.
According to the statement by Mba, the action was taken due to the yearnings of Nigerians.
The statement read in parts, ”The IGP, while noting that the dissolution of SARS is in response to the yearnings of the Nigerian people, observes that by this dissolution, all officers and men of the now defunct Special Anti-robbery Squad are being redeployed with immediate effect.
”He assures that a new policing arrangement to address anticipated policing gaps the dissolution of SARS would cause has been evolved and shall be announced in due course.
”In addition, the Force is constituting an Investigation Team which shall include Civil Society Organizations and Human Rights Bodies to work with the Police in investigating alleged cases of human rights violations.”
