Hours later, cause of Kano explosion still a debate

The cause of a deadly explosion that occurred along Court Road, Sabon Gari area of Kano State is still being debated four hours after the incident, even as the government said investigation is ongoing.

The explosion, which reportedly claimed not fewer than four lives, was said to have occurred near a private secondary school, Winners School, around 9:30am on Tuesday.

Visuals have continued to show injured school children and charred bodies but the number of casualties has remained unknown as some were said to be trapped under a collapsed building.

Security operatives, including the army, police, and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps officer are currently in the area, including the National Emergency Management Agency and Fire service operatives.

The Kano State Government announced that the explosion did not occur in a school but at an animal feed store opposite the school.

Commissioner for Information, Muhammad Garba, said the cause of the explosion and the damage had yet to be officially ascertained, adding that investigation has commenced.

Nigerians had earlier taken to social media to give different accounts of the incident, with some claiming it was a bomb blast caused by a suicide bomber while others said it was a gas explosion.

The Kano State Commissioner of Police, Sama’ila Dikko, had also asserted that it was a gas explosion.
