Empower INEC to Prosecute Electoral Offenders, Yiaga Africa Stakeholders Urges FG

Stakeholders at Yiaga Africa Post-Election Reflection Meeting with Ekiti Civil Society Organization, CSO, leaders have canvassed that the Independent National Electoral Commission should be empowered to prosecute electoral offenders in the country.

The call was made during a post-Ekiti governorship election meeting on Tuesday in Ado-Ekiti.

They also called for the amendment of the electoral laws to make INEC act independent of the presidency to be able to act right.

“The new electoral law should be on how to make INEC independent. They
have to stand on their own and conduct election independently without
the interference of the presidency.”

Speaking also at the post-election reflection, a Board member of Yiaga
Africa, Ezenwa Nwagwu, called on INEC to build cubicles in a way to ensure secrecy of ballots at the polling units ahead of the 2023 general elections.

Nwagwu also lamented the non-availability of necessary materials in Ekiti State for Persons Living with Disabilities (PWDs) in terms of magnifying glasses for Albinos and the required gadgets for the hearing-impaired persons.

“The challenges is that people living with disabilities complained about lack of assisting materials, especially for Albinos,  as well as logistics like magnifying glasses for person’s with impaired vision.

“INEC should ensure that they have data of PWDs and ensure they know
where they are located. So, if you have to bring magnifying glasses
to those places, you have to know the numbers of the people living
with albinism.”
