Court remands four bricklayers over attempt on monarch’s life

An Osun State Magistrates’ Court sitting in Osogbo, the state capital, has remanded four bricklayers for allegedly attempting to kill Onigege of Igege, Oba Kazeem Adio, over a land issue.

Mujeeb Semi, 25, Kazeem Olasunkanmi, 47, Rokibu Kabiru, 27, and Ismaheel Nurudeen, 32, were arraigned before Magistrate Olusegun Ayilara on a five-count charge bordering on conspiracy, a misdemeanour of the content of court, forcible entry, malicious damage, breach of peace and attempted murder.

The police prosecutor, Inspector Lamidi Rasaki, alleged that the defendants and others at large, between January and February 2022, at Igege area conspired among themselves to commit the crimes after entering a piece of land situated at Obafoworo area to unlawfully damage palm trees, including other economical trees.

Rasaki said the defendants threatened to kill the owner of the land, Oba Kazeem Adio, as they were armed with guns, cutlasses, axes and other dangerous weapons.

The offences contravened sections 517, 81, 451, 86 and 133(9) of the Criminal Code Cap. 34 Vol. II Laws of Osun State of Nigeria, 2002.

The four defendants pleaded not guilty while their counsel, Najite Okobe, applied for bail with assurance of reliable sureties.

Inspector Rasaki however opposed the bail application, maintaining that the accused persons might eventually carry out their plan on the monarch if released.

Consequently, Magistrate Ayilara ordered that the suspects be remanded in Ilesha correctional facility and adjourned the matter till 14th April, 2022.
