The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has said the viral kidnap story of one Safiyanu Amira is false but the victim is currently in the hospital ‘receiving medical attention as demanded by global best practices’.
The victim, through @Ameerah_sufyan on Twitter, had raised an alarm on Tuesday that she was kidnapped alongside 16 other persons, including 3 pregnant women, by men in police uniform.
She further tweeted that the abductors were of Yoruba and Fulani descents and they were headed towards Ilorin, Ibadan or Ikeja in Lagos.
The internet had gone into a frenzy with #Ameerah as celebrities and others called on the police to act fast while casting aspersions on security agents for alleged slow response.
In a statement on Friday by the Deputy Police Public Relations Officer of the FCT Command, ASP Oduniyi Omotayo, the police said the abduction claim was false and that the victim was already in their custody.
The police, however, did not give further details.
“The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command wishes to categorically debunk the viral news of the alleged kidnapping of one and seventeen (17) others who were reportedly abducted at gunpoint by Armed men in Police uniform on Tuesday 14th June 2022 at about 1:00 pm and to state that Safiyanu Amira is currently safe in Police custody. While she is currently in the hospital receiving medical attention as demanded by global best practices, the investigation continues and findings will be communicated subsequently.
“The Commissioner of Police FCT Command CP Babaji Sunday psc while commending the gallantry of the Tactical and Investigative apparatus detailed on the case, appreciated the members of the public for their calm maintained and the various degrees of useful information given to the Police,” the statement read in part.
