Alleged rape: Court remands Ekiti teachers in police custody

Three secondary teachers in Ekiti State were on Friday remanded in police custody by an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistate Court over alleged sexual molestation of students in their schools.

Messrs Ajibola Gbenga and Olaofe Abiodun of All Souls Grammar School, Ado-Ekiti, and Mr Olaitan Adeyanju of Osi Community High School, Osi-Ekiti, were arraigned separately before Chief Magistrate Adesoji Adegboye for alleged rape.

The trio, who were dismissed from service on Thursday, were said to have committed the offence in December 2019.

Announcing the dismissal, Teaching Service Commission Chairman, Hon Babatunde Abegunde, said Mr Ajibola was a Grade level 12 Officer and taught Computer Education, Mr Olaofe, a Grade Level 14 officer was a teacher of Chemistry, while Mr Adeyanju was a GL 13 Officer who taught Accounts.

He stated that the penalty meted out to them was in line with the Public Service Rules and the State Teachers’ Manual, adding that the Commission followed the due process as laid down by extant rule.

Arraigning 40-year-old Ajibola, Insp. Johnson Okunade told the court that the defendant raped a 17-year-old student, an offence which contravened Section 2(2) of the Ekiti State Gender Based Violence Law 2019.

He asked the court for adjournment to enable him forward the case file to office of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice.

Another prosecutor, Insp. Oriyomi Akinwale, told the court that 44-year-old Olaitan engaged an SSS 3 student to agree and marry him, to the detriment of her academic and psychological well-being, an offence which contravened Section 6(1) of the Ekiti State Gender Based Violence (prohibition) Law 2019.

He also asked the court for adjournment to enable him forward the case file to office of Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice.

Similarly, 50-year-old Ayodele was alleged to have raped a 15-year-old student, an offence which contravened Section 2(2) of the Ekiti State Gender Based Violence Law 2019.

The prosecutor, Insp. Johnson Okunade, also asked the court for adjournment to enable him forward the case file to office of Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice.

The pleas of all the defendants were not taken.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Adesoji Adegboye, ordered that the defendants should be kept in the police custody pending issuance of legal advice from DPP.

He adjourned the cases till March 2 for mention.
