The US House of Representatives on Wednesday impeached President Donald Trump for “incitement of insurrection” at last week’s Capitol riot.
Trump has become the first president in the history of the United States to be impeached — charged with serious crimes — by Congress.
The Republican will now face a trial in the Senate, where if convicted, could bar him from ever holding office again.
The impeachment measure passed largely along party lines by 232-197 as ten Republicans sided with Democrats.
Meanwhile, it is unlikely Trump leaves the White House before his term in office ends in seven days as the Senate is not expected to convene in time.
Recall that Trump is due to leave office on 20 January after losing to Democrat’s Joe Biden at last November poll though the 74-year-old claimed the election was rigged.
