The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, has died, aged 83.
Adeyemi, the longest reigning Alaafin who ruled for almost 52 years, died at the Afe Babalola University Teaching Hospital, Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State on Friday night.
Born Lamidi Olayiwola Atanda Adeyemi on October 15, 1938, he was a lover of boxing who had to retire early due to his coronation.
He was crowned on November 18, 1970, as a successor of Oba Gbadegesin Ladigbolu I.
During his reign, he was permanently the chairman of the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs.
Oba Adeyemi married Ayaba Abibat Adeyemi, his senior wife, and had other wives including: Ayaba Rahmat Adedayo Adeyemi, Ayaba Mujidat Adeyemi, Ayaba Rukayat Adeyemi, Ayaba Folashade Adeyemi, Ayaba Badirat Ajoke Adeyemi, Ayaba Memunat Omowunmi Adeyemi, Ayaba Omobolanle Adeyemi, Ayaba Moji Adeyemi, Ayaba Anuoluwapo Adeyemi, and Ayaba Damilola Adeyemi.
He is survived by many children.
