Appeal court gives new ruling on Sowore

The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja has lifted the movement restriction on human rights activist and convener of #RevolutionNow, Omoyele Sowore.

Sowore was restricted in 2019 to Abuja by a Federal High Court following appearance in court over charges of treasonable felony and cyberstalking President Muhammadu Buhari, among other offences.

Ruling on the appeal, the court said Sowore is free to leave Abuja but not Nigeria, while describing the initial restriction of the 2023 presidential aspirant as “excessive”.

Recall that Sowore was arrested by operatives of the Department of State Services in a Lagos hotel on August 3, 2019, for planning to organise a protest, #RevolutionNow.

Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu subsequently restricted him to Abuja as part of the bail conditions.
