The House of Representatives has called on the Minister of State for Labour, Festus Keyamo (SAN), to suspend the planned January 2021 implementation of the Special Public Works Programme of the Federal Government.
The house at the plenary on Tuesday said the programme will not be implemented until a comprehensive list of beneficiaries from the Nigerian directorate of employment is made available.
774,000 people are expected to be recruited by the Federal Government under the Special Public Works Programme, with the sum of N52 billion, earmarked in the 2020 budget. A total of 1,000 people are to be employed from each of the 774 Local Government Areas in the country.
Recall that the programme was initially billed to commence on October 1, but the National Assembly and the Federal Ministry of Labour, Employment and Productivity had clashed over the sharing formula for the recruitment of workers for the scheme.
At the plenary on Tuesday, the House asked the Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget, and National Planning not to fund the scheme until the information demanded is provided.
